St. John's University - New York Reviews

Rating 3 out of 5
St. John's University is a good school if you want to get a degree and make connections. The workload isn't very challenging so if you are looking for an easy breezy way through college, St. John's is the place for you. However, if you really want to gain knowledge for professional careers or graduate programs, maybe look elsewhere. The lure of St. John's is that even though tuition is expensive, most students get hefty scholarships. Also, St. John's is close to Manhattan which is pretty cool. However, the area surrounding St. John's campus can be dangerous at times. The security on campus is outstanding though! One positive of St. John's is their study abroad opportunities, which they have plenty of. If you commit to St. John's, I highly recommend studying abroad.

St. John’s University is a mixed basket when it comes to Academics, Student Life, and general social life. For one, the freshman advisors are unmotivated and at times dismissive and un-encouraging. Class requirements are lackluster, the majority being core classes that have nothing to do with intended majors. Professors are subpar at best, many are preforming at a bare minimum level and often lack engagement with students. If you enjoy extracurriculars, don’t come here. Nearly all clubs are purely student run and are unorganized and meet once a semester. If you are not a STEM major there are no opportunities for research either. Much of the faculty resort to advertising graduate programs rather than addressing student concerns. The majority of the student base is behind when it comes to class completion which limits younger students from completing entry level courses and forces seniors to spend extra money to complete degrees.

To say my experience with St. John’s was a disappointment would be a huge understatement. They are a disorganized institution with very poor communication, they always get the billing wrong, their water and gas lines are break down frequently, the food is bland, the academics don’t live up to their good rating, and the professors cater greatly to students it becomes a detriment to their future successes. When my dorm got burglarized, they charged me to move me to a safer room. Campus security doesn’t watch the campus well.
I was frequently infuriated by how many staff members refused to be helpful or do anything they felt “wasn’t part of their job description.”
