Velma (Season 1), Episodes 7 & 8: The mystery behind Daphne’s parents was solved, and it’s out of the way. However, Daphne’s mother could be the fourth victim of the killer as she was attacked towards the end of episode 6. Aman Dinkley believed Velma’s story and identified Diya Dinkley’s handwriting on a paper in the cellar of the Jones manor. With her hallucination problem firmly in check, Velma was expected to make major inroads in this week’s set of episodes.
I did notice the classic Scooby-Doo references in this one. The running through doors, the music, the stopping somewhere randomly to throw on a disguise in lightning-quick time, and more.
Did the showrunners start off too aggressively and alienate audiences? Perhaps.
Velam (Season 1), Episodes 7 & 8 Recap:
Episode 7: Fog Fest
Velma assumed the ‘Jinkies’ was left for her to find. She, therefore, began reading through her mother’s novels. She discovered nothing but an insomnia cure and a bunch of cold trails.
Sophie tricked Aman with a ‘Fogposal’ that annoyed Velma, as the Fog Festival was still going ahead. Crystal Cove canceled the curfew, as they believed the killings were the work of the ghost of Dr. Edna Perdue. Also, the festival would only allow males and females with dates. Velma called out the sexist rules.

Fred was ordered to win the Fog King crown or not return home. Norville asked Gigi to go to Fog Fest with him and received a positive reply. When an upset Velma confronted him, he urged Velma to think about the Fog’s positives and let off some steam from the search for the ‘Jinkies’ clue. In another blow to Velma, Fred asked Daphne to Fog Fest as it would improve his chances of winning Fog King.
On the Fog Fest night, Daphne ignored Velma, who was alone at home. Velma found a clue and a phone number. When she called, someone picked it up. This helped Velma hear some noise to make a few deductions. She concluded that the killer was at Fog Fest. Hence, Velma dressed like a man and went to the venue. She got onto a ride to have a good vantage point of the park, even spotting the killer from high up in the sky.
Meanwhile, Fred seemed upset at Norville’s pitch to make Gigi Fog Queen and challenged him to a fight-off. This saw Daphne hunt for another dance partner. Velma ‘Manny’ was around and got dragged into the tent for a dance. As Velma ‘Manny’ saw her gender get acceptance, she used it to convince people that Crystal Cove was dealing with a serial killer, not a ghost.
Daphne opened up to ‘Manny,’ who had just won Fog King. As they were about to kiss, and upset Fred ripped off Manny’s mustache to reveal Velma. It may have been an act of desperation to ensure he could safely re-enter the Jones manor.
Fred informed the audience of Velma’s deception, but Norville clinched the crown as he had saved a child. She, however, claimed that she had been pushed.
Daphne was upset at Velma and confided in ‘Manny,’ but got let down again. As she expressed her disappointment in Velma, the killer showed up and chased the group. He then vanished and left his phone on Fred’s head.
Gigi was upset that Norville ignored her to win the crown. She called him weird but sweet and amazing. Following that, Gigi tossed the crown in the trash and accepted Norville for his efforts. Fred gleefully fished it out and looked pleased.
He then visited a mirror hall and disappeared.
Episode 8: Velma in The Woods
The episode was largely flashbacks. A rock pinned Daphne and Velma in a ravine. The killer situation seemed to bring things back to normal between the two. However, Fred’s disappearance became the talk of the town, and Daphne’s mom had to find him. As they left Fog Fest, Velma, and Daphne tried to identify how they could hack the serial killer’s phone.
That saw Daphne’s moms reveal an incident called ‘The Incident’ as they named their adopted daughter as a hacking expert. Daphne used a light to figure out the phone’s password and found that the killer had used it near Mount Crystal. Hence, Velma decided that she and Daphne would go there.
The next day Daphne refused to tag along as Olive was at her place. Daphne and Olive were about to take sexy pictures for a calendar they would sell to fight discrimination against hot girls. Hence, a desperate Velma faked a hallucination to coerce Daphne to accompany her.
At the woods, Daphne and Velma showed up at Gigi’s cabin with Norville. Gigi looked shocked as she was partially undressed with the assumption that she would have a weekend alone with Norville. The assumption was formed thanks to her dropping hints and him asking her if her cabin was empty.
Meanwhile, Fred woke up in a dungeon where Krista, Lola, and Brenda’s brains were in bottles. They spoke to him and seemed to be up to date with Fred’s life. Desperate and hungry, Fred tried to eat rats, but they exploded as he roasted them over a fire. He then tried to make out their brain jars.
Gigi became irate with Norville above ground and walked away. Daphne also joined her as Norville told her that Velma’s hallucinations were a thing of the past. This upsets her because the suspicions of fake hallucinations were confirmed. Norville then told Velma that ‘The Incident’ saw Daphne hack Gigi’s phone.
Velma ran out and saw Daphne and Gigi on a rock at the edge of the cliff. As they sat there, the duo pleaded with Norville and Velma not to move forward. The mountain ridge was compromised. Norville and Velma stopped in their tracks, but that didn’t help as the thing cracked.
A boulder pinned the quartet, and they blamed each other. Daphne finally admitted that it was her fault. The group then realized that one could escape if the other person got crushed. Gigi made a decision and decided to break out, leading to each person pushing on the rock. This saw the ground crumble and sent the quartet plummeting further into the ground. They landed in an extension of Crystal Cove Mines.
Gigi and Norville climbed out while Velma and Daphne went into the tunnel. The girls understood that they couldn’t be friends. Hence, Velma put forth the idea that they be girlfriends.
While walking, they heard Fred’s voice and freed him. As Velma and Daphne spotted the three brains, Fred gleefully ran out and started screaming. This caused the mine to cave in.
Velma interrogated the brains about whether her mother showed up, but they just said they saw a “Freak in a welder’s mask.”
Velma (Season 1), Episode 8 Ending, Explained:
The ending saw the dungeon floor splitting. Fred and Daphne were on the side of safety, but Velma was in danger. She rescued the three brains and tried to leap over the crevasse. Velma took an eternity as she soared through the air and landed. Unfortunately, she slipped, and someone saved her.
That person got Daphne, Velma, and Fred to a jeep and drove them out of the mines. Once out, Velma questioned the person about the identity of the culprit. However, that mystery individual was blank.
Who saved Velma?
Velma was about to fall down a deep crevasse. She fell into the gorge, but her mother held on to her. Diya Dinkley dove in and assisted Fred and Daphne in saving Velma. This solved the mystery of Diya Dinkley and showed Velma’s faith in her mother not leaving voluntarily was justified.
Did Diya Dinkley reveal the culprit?
Velma kept hugging Diya Dinkley as she sat on a stretcher near the ambulance. When she heard the reporter leave an open-ended question to the audience, Velma realized she had to ask her mother about the identity of the individual behind the welder’s mask.
Diya Dinkley opened her mouth but looked blank and confused. She then replied that she didn’t remember.
Will she remember next week? She has to. It is the finale. Find out the killer’s identity next week in Family Wo(Man) or The Brains of the Operation.
