Nothing great is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig. I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.

Well, I have 15 fig trees, all rare varieties. Nothing is better than a fresh fig eaten right off the tree. I have a few favorites. One is Verte. It tastes like strawberry jam. One is Mary Lane seedless. That drip of honey tells you exactly the joy you will get with your first bite. Unfortunately, figs don’t produce year round, and these spreads look delicious. I’d try them over cream cheese as an appetizer, on pancakes instead of syrup, and use them as a filling for buttery cookies. OH, and toast.

I started all my fig trees from cuttings. I do live in a good climate for them. They love hot summers and mild winters, which is what you get here in my part of Southern California. You can get cuttings on Ebay now when the trees are dormant. Nothing like a fresh fig! People in NY have fig trees in containers, which they bring into their basem*nts for winter protection. Just FYI!

I have one sad stick that may be a fig bush, but I don’t know if winter killed it yet. I’m waiting to see if it sprouts leaves. We have 4 or 5 varieties available in local nurseries, so maybe I’ll give it another go and be more conscientious about it.

Lucky you! I keep trying to grow a fig bush in my backyard, but I am so not a gardener. If it requires watering, it’s doomed!

I honestly think I’d start with a spoon– just sit down and taste each and every one!

Living in the cold Midwest we dont much see good figs here, and certainly cant grow them. I adore the taste of figs though and for us it is a treat. I would use these on a piece of hot homemade bread or perhaps on some pancakes or if I was being honest , I would grab a teaspoon and just take a spoonful and close my eyes and dream of warm breezes. So many ways to eat figs I couldnt pick just one.

I grew up with a fig tree and miss eating figs off the tree while they were still warm from the sun. Trying to capture that again. I would use the jam baked with cheese inside phyllo dough.

What a lovely thought. I remember my fig tree when I was a kid- it was in a very sunny spot that would get so hot during the summer!

I too miss eating delicious figs right off the trees I grew up with (sigh)!! I would love to try these jams over ice cream, on pizza, with cheese and crackers, but for me nothing beats fig jam over toasted English muffins! 🙂

Oh my goodness have not seen one of these since 1989…. We worked in Israel and they had orchards of them….. The farmers wife would take a fig, and put marzipan and a half a walnut in it and service them with a drizzle of honey…. So good…… Mmmmmmmm…..
