Dominican Blowout...Style? Or lack there of? (2024)

Hi Everyone ,

I learned about how wonderful domincan blowouts can be by visiting this forum Within one month, I was at the salon 3 saturdays getting a blowout, lol. However, each time I was less than satisfied with my style. I see so many ladies walk out with beautiful styles and fullness. Some have curls, layers, flips, or straight hair at the end. However, one stylist I went to simply parted my hair on one side and brushed the front of my hair sideways. The back seemed nice and full and when I went home I adjusted my bang to look a little better. However the style looked really plain...almost dull. The third time I went I was afraid of heat damage so I asked that only the roots be blown out. Well my hair is neck length but I have been asked if I wanted it curly before so I figured there was a style in mind. Apparantly I was wrong. The stylist tried her best and kept adding glosser to try and get the curls to fall into a style. It was a disaster. I finally asked that she wrap it so that I could leave the salon without looking afright. Once I got home, I combed down the wrap and it was a hot greasy, oily, stiff mess erplexed ! Plus I have noticed more flyaways and broken pieces towards my crown. Has anyone else experienced this no style phenomenon? Are there specific instructions I should try to relay to the stylists? Is the blowout more for ladies who have achieved a specific length? Are there better options for ladies with neck length hair? Basically, if you have any comment at all, I'd love to hear it . I want to achieve healthy and pretty hair at any stage of length. Maybe the blowouts are just not for everyone...

LOL....yeah CRL I was even kinda down when I saw how blah my hair looked in comparison to others in the salon. Any other ladies here experience this or have comments on what to look/ask for with respect to style when getting a dominican blowout?

OMG This was my experience. I don't really have a "haircut" in a specific style. My hair is blunt with no layers and my hair looked like a d*** mushroom from 1978 when I left the salon. It was not a great "styling" experience at all. You are not alone. I think it looks best when the hair is at least slightly layered!

Yeah, I think some ladies with natural hair have it tough there. I overheard one lady complaining about how she stopped coming for a while because they kept pressuring her to get a relaxer. I think I may go back to the salon I went to previously that is a typical AA salon. But one day I was in there from 4:30 pm until 12:30 am!!! So , I'm not so excited about the possibility of having those long waits which is what pushed me away from those salons from the start.

Dominicans tend not to know how to style short hair. I've noticed this as well and it also been my experience. I would simply re-style my hair once I got home. I now go to black folks who know how to give me an all around good salon experience. I also stopped going to Lily's because they would literally cringe looking at my natural hair and asking me if I wanted a perm! They would then go on to tell me, "Ohh mami, you hair looks so much better!" As if my coily natural hair wasn't good enough.

I am a fan of the Dominican blowout. My hair is a little past shoulder length and is in layers but when I had chin length hair I would either get it blown out with a little body or just my roots. The way to do it is just tell them you want the roots. Bring in your own big comb and once they are done with the roots put in a little serum and comb it and style it yourself. Since joining LHCF I do not let them blow it out straight - too much heat and pulling.

I don't think it's either one of those, but I'm not sure what it is exactly. I've used NTM serum before.
